Street Fight Flow Chart
I like to keep a good mix of high and low, intellectual and fun, feminine and masculine, etc. etc. on Wonderlust, and since I just posted all those pretty outfits, I thought I’d throw this into the ring for a bit of more man-oriented fun/humor. And who doesn’t love a good flow chart?

Minimalist Movie Posters
Like the “unsheets” I posted a while back, these movie posters by Kyle Tezak have an awesome minimalist style; they say a lot with very little.
Here’s what Tezak says about the project:
“Lately I’ve been working a lot with icons. Trying to capture the essence of an object or idea with only a few lines and at the same time maintaining its elegance is pretty much design in a nutshell. That’s what is so great about icons, they’re tiny poems. I decided it would be a fun project to attempt to sum up some of my favorite books, movies, historical events, anything, with just four icons; the meat and potatoes.”

le programme de ma semaine
I love this planner. Small enough to fit in your purse, just two basic boxes per day– an am and a pm (does it bug anyone else when there are lines for each and every hour of the day? It just makes me feel bad about myself that I don’t have something to write onto every single hour, and my to-dos tend to fit more free-form into my day anyway, so then I don’t know where to write them.), and plenty of room on the reverse of the previous page to jot other notes (another common planner downfall– when there’s no spare room to write notes besides the boxes for each day).
And the spiral-binding allows it to lay flat! One of my must-have features for a planner. I hate when they won’t lay flat on your desk.
And, it’s cute.

50 and 50: The State Mottos
This is horribly embarrassing, but If I had to point out Iowa and Missouri on a blank map, there’s about a 50/50 chance I’d mix them up. Also, the other day, I found myself in a conversation in which I was suddenly wondering if the Emirates in the United Arab Emirates were cities? Or states? How did I make it through 17 years of great schools without mastering geography?
All of that to say, I think this new project called 50 and 50, where a graphic designer from each state will illustrate their state’s motto, creating a “designers’ atlas,” may be my ticket to finally at least mastering our own 50 states.
So far, there are only six finished, but they are pretty enough that I spent time checking out each one, and if something is visually interesting, I have a far better chance of learning it…
PS- Did you know that California’s state motto is “I have found it! (Eureka)”? How awesome and (so California) is that? All of the other ones sound very formal and heavily wrought and then there’s California’s. And incidentally, as a California transplant, I talk almost every day about how I feel like I’ve discovered the best place on earth, so I can see why CA’s state motto-authors were unable to write anything other than something simply reflecting their joy at having found this state.

Dana Tanamachi’s Chalk Installations
I love chalkboard paint (see past post on chalk paint walls), and I love chalk writing (don’t menus in cafes look so much more charming when they’re written on a chalk board?), so naturally, I love Dana Tanamachi’s chalk installations. Their retro hand-painted storefront window sign quality is so appealing!
In addition to her chalk work, Dana also works for Louise Fili, so it’s no surprise that she’s a whiz with letterforms and signage.
Check out this fun 30-second time-lapse film of her Cooper Collection installation. I love that it’s set to a Morning Benders song!

Indexed
Every once in a while, I love to check in on Jessica Hagy’s blog, Indexed. Each day, Jessica publishes either a venn diagram or a chart, and I absolutely love them for the same reason that I love good design: they communicate something complex simply. And quite often, they say something funny concisely, which is extra impressive.

Bing Treasure Maps
This is so cool. Bing seems to realize that it can’t compete with google on certain levels, like speed or algorithms, so instead it’s taken the approach of delivering more unique results.
With a new program in beta, you can have your directions rendered as a treasure map– complete with wrinkled, old looking “paper,” a hand drawn route, and even an “x” marking the spot.
In addition to aesthetically appealing to designy nerds with its un-techy, handmade feel, it also has the added practical benefit of simplifying your map– it eliminates many of the outer surrounding streets that don’t affect your route, making it easier to follow your basic trajectory.
