More Blue Note album covers, for the most part art directed by Reid Miles, photos on 1, 2, and 5 by Francis Wolff.

Seriously love this poster for Coffee & Cigarettes cleverly containing a coffee cup, an ampersand, and a cigarette.

Did you know that Andy Warhol did illustrations for a few of the Blue Note covers in the late 1950s when he was still working as a commercial artist and had not yet achieved any acclaim? I am loving the one above.
Are you surprised to see something by Warhol in this expressionistic (and non-pop) style? Doesn’t the drawing of the woman look very much like a Matisse drawing??
I’ve just dived head-long into what might be aptly described as an obsession with Blue Note and especially the 1500 and early 4000 series covers art directed by Reid Miles and commonly featuring photography by Francis Wolff.
Many more to come, they are a rich visual history of graphic design, typography, photography, illustration, and the hard bop era of New York jazz…

Rethink Communication rethought (ha, ha, great pun, I know) the concept of “table wine” for this wine packaging they created as a promo to display their outside-the-box design capabilities. Pretty clever, no?
Of course I love the Saarinen tulip table version.

This is cool! What a great example of using art for a civic cause! Every year, Ithaca, the island in Greece, hosts a global poster design competition called “Ten Images for Ithaca,” with a specific theme, as a way of emphasizing the island’s focus on culture and the arts and bringing creative people together on the island. This year’s theme was “labels.”

Moving Brands, a branding company based in London, was asked by E. Tautz, a luxury menswear brand, which started out as a military-outfitter, to create a brand identity for them.
Above is the logo they came up with, pairing the clean, modern Gill typeface with the traditional-looking fox and whip icon, all set on the broad field of utilitarian-feeling yellow. Don’t you think the yellow is a stroke of genius? The yellow is so unusual and distinctive and the size of the field compared to the actual logo makes a serious visual impact.
Below, their creative process and the resulting collateral.

Sometimes I come across things that just make my nerdy-designy heart race. Like these Kate Spade clutches, printed with their own re-imagined vintage book cover designs on silk twill. Would I actually carry one of these around? I’m not sure, it could be a little kitschy in real life. Do I love the concept? YES.
Love the back cover for Great Expectations…

PS – I once found a pair of the Z chair in lucite at a consignment shop for like $200 total, and I decided to think about it for a day, and I went back and they were gone, and I’ve honestly mourned the decision ever since. Bird in the hand, people, bird. in. the. hand. Let me have learned this lesson for you.
PPS – Kyle, I know what you’re going to say- we literally have no space or use for more chairs. I know. But I looove them. You got lucky on this one.
